Measure before ordering
Break beds into rectangles, circles and simple shapes, calculate the area and then account for the depth being added. Existing mulch may reduce the amount needed.
Keep mulch away from trunks
A mulch volcano holds moisture against bark and hides the root flare. Pull material back from tree trunks and plant crowns rather than stacking it for appearance.
Prepare the bed first
Correct weeds, drainage problems, buried edging and irrigation conflicts before covering the surface. Mulch should finish the bed—not conceal unresolved problems.
Choose material by function and appearance
Texture, color, decomposition rate, slope and runoff all affect the choice. Commercial entrances may prioritize consistency, while naturalized areas may use a different material.
Refresh based on condition
Do not add a full new layer automatically every year. Check remaining depth, compaction and decomposition, then add only what the bed needs.
